Thierry Mugler's Nineties Fashion Fantasy

Unlike other designers who played with elements of bondage and sex in their collections, Thierry Mugler went all the way at his Spring 1991 show. Tim Blanks looks back at this peak moment in the designer's career.

00:13
This is throwback Thursdays, I'm Tim Blanks,
00:16
one of the most popular pieces we showed last season
00:18
was about Thierry Mugler's 20th anniversary show,
00:20
that was really worth sharing.
00:22
So here's some more.
00:24
All Thierry Mugler shows are like nothing else in fashion.
00:29
That's because they're not really fashion.
00:30
What we're looking at here isn't a proposal for day wear,
00:34
for example.
00:35
What we do see here is a career that's definitely
00:37
on track for Las Vegas.
00:41
What was happening in fashion at this time was that
00:43
the crash in the late 80's that happened,
00:45
there was a time of reassessment on its way.
00:48
And if you think of fashion as a banquet table,
00:51
then this was insane dessert.
00:54
Which would probably make you very, very high,
00:56
but give you a little bit of indigestion as well.
00:59
The shows themselves weren't particularly slick.
01:02
I remember that they always started really late,
01:05
they were always terribly, badly organized.
01:07
You'd hit this at the end of the day and you'd be a bit
01:10
like, Oh, really?
01:11
But now of course, you're looking at it and thinking,
01:13
Oh my God, give me that right now.
01:17
Mugler was always a fan,
01:20
and it was intriguing to see who he could rope
01:23
into his games.
01:25
Obviously you see a lot of familiar supermodel faces here,
01:28
but to see someone like Lauren Hutton on his catwalk
01:31
would be quite a surprise.
01:33
He would find models who obviously meant a lot to him
01:36
at some time in his youth,
01:38
and he would put them back on stage,
01:40
in a rather loving way.
01:42
I think Diana Ross was somewhere in the show, too,
01:45
we don't actually see her, but there was a rumor.
01:49
In terms of his career at this time,
01:51
I think Mugler had possibly peaked.
01:53
His really dominant years were in the 80's
01:55
when his clothes were all over French Vogue,
01:58
and in incredible scenarios that did them full justice.
02:03
He did have a business making exquisite suits,
02:06
beautiful tailored outfits for his clientele.
02:10
He also did go on to have the best-selling perfume
02:12
in the world, and so this was really, just, for him,
02:15
probably just a wonderful promotional exercise.
02:18
Once you've seen these clothes,
02:20
you're hardly gonna forget the name
02:21
and the man who made them.
02:23
(funky music)
02:34
Do you love the crazy?
02:35
Let me know.
02:36
This has been Throwback Thursdays, and I'm Tim Blanks.
