Jeremy Scott’s Pink Poodle Collection

It was one of the first collections he showed in Paris. In the late ’90s, wild child Jeremy Scott pushed clichés about French attire to the extreme by outfitting models in bright pink feminine frocks and separates with matching canine companions. Tim Blanks looks back on the amusing collection and how Scott has carried his irreverent aesthetic to Moschino today.

I mean, I've been living my whole life in the year 2000.
00:02
How could be so close, but then things look
00:05
so far away from it and people are showing
00:07
the same stuff and no one's going further.
00:09
♫ Oh, you better step away
00:11
♫ Number one in heaven with a bullet
00:15
♫ I'll come for you when I can
00:17
♫ Tell them I'm smiling
00:21
This is Throwback Thursdays and I'm Tim Blanks.
00:23
If you're a lover of pink poodles,
00:25
you might want to share what we're
00:27
about to see with your friends.
00:28
If you love what Jeremy Scott's doing at Moschino,
00:30
you might want to share what you're about to see as well.
00:33
Because we're looking at one of the
00:35
first shows he ever put together in Paris
00:37
at the end of the '90s.
00:38
He had such an ideal vision of what
00:41
Paris fashion was gonna be all about.
00:44
But then his logo, Jeremy Scott Paris,
00:47
he reversed the Paris.
00:48
And I think he actually reversed
00:51
a lot of the notions of
00:53
bourgeois good tastes and so on in what he did.
00:56
This show, Pink Show, was exactly that.
00:59
It was a show about pink.
01:01
It was a show of exaggeration.
01:03
The proportions were enormous, puffy.
01:06
So many cliches about
01:08
smart, French dressing pushed to the max.
01:11
The elegant pencil skirts and the
01:13
pussy bow blouses and once everything
01:15
was done in pink, it took on this
01:17
slightly sort of garish turn.
01:19
And then, of course, those great big beautiful poodles.
01:22
(upbeat dance music)
01:43
Jeremy himself, at that time,
01:45
was a real little piss and vinegar guy.
01:48
He was totally unfazed by showing in Paris.
01:51
I'm trying to present things and say
01:53
Look, these are things, take them or leave them,
01:54
love them or hate them, but propose them
01:57
because one's proposing anything.
01:59
His earliest champion was Isabella Blow who was
02:02
very very good at getting the word out about young talent.
02:06
She used to wear this amazing sunray pleated white thing
02:09
he'd made and people would see this great outfit
02:12
and by the time he started showing, it was a real buzz.
02:15
(upbeat music)
02:21
After the Gold Show, which had been a major disappointment
02:25
because people were really excited about it
02:27
and it was actually quite a fiasco.
02:29
Coming into the Pink Show,
02:30
he had a little bit more to prove.
02:33
(upbeat music)
02:36
I don't know if it particularly restored the luster.
02:39
That was probably too much to ask of it.
02:41
But it really has a charm that's endured
02:44
and you think of how young he was when he did this show
02:47
and what a sort of love letter to fashion it is, in a way.
02:52
(upbeat dance music)
02:55
With what Jeremy has done over the years,
02:57
you can feel a sort of slight malevolence.
02:59
You know, the way that cartoons can sometimes have teeth.
03:03
You're never quite sure whether you're looking at
03:05
something that is the most ironic thing you've ever seen
03:08
or whether it's actually a celebration.
03:11
And it's interesting to trace all of that
03:13
back to these first shows in Paris.
03:16
(upbeat dance music)
03:23
So that was Jeremy Scott.
03:25
He's all over fashion now,
03:26
still stirring up controversy.
03:28
I'm sure that you have something to say about that,
03:30
even if it's just about the pink poodles.
03:32
This has been Throwback Thursdays and I'm Tim Blanks.
