Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. Debut Was B-A-N-A-N-A-S

Back in the day, Tim Blanks often saw Gwen Stefani at John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood shows. Turns out, she was just doing her homework. In the early aughts she launched L.A.M.B.—a rocker-chic clothing line that made the fashion world take notice.

Thank God there's a Gwen Stefani,
00:01
because, when I was younger, she's who I looked up to.
00:04
It wasn't Britney Spears or any of that.
00:08
I thought Gwen was who I wanted to be.
00:10

00:22
This is Throwback Thursdays, and I'm Tim Blanks.
00:25
Normally I like to mine for gold in the distant past,
00:28
but today we're doing something a little bit different.
00:30
We're looking at a 90s icon
00:32
as she takes her first steps on the fashion stage.
00:35
It's Gwen Stefani, so tell your friends.
00:38
I used to see Gwen at Vivienne Westwood shows
00:41
and John Galliano shows,
00:42
and she was clearly doing her homework.
00:44
Somewhere along the line,
00:46
she turned into a real fashion icon herself.
00:49
You know what was really shocking for me,
00:51
this is not like a No Doubt concert backstage.
00:53
It's like, it's mayhem.
00:56
[Tim] I believe the show was staged at Roseland,
00:58
which is a perfect synchronicity, because actually
01:01
the very first fashion show she ever went to,
01:03
was Versace show at Roseland.
01:07
And we were late and we missed the whole thing.
01:10
We just saw the snake at the end.
01:11
Cause we didn't know it was 15 minutes!
01:13
(upbeat rhythmic music)
01:17
[Tim] She's a very persuasive live performer
01:18
and I think she was able to put all her experience
01:21
in her music career into her clothes.
01:24
It was like the many faces of Gwen on her catwalk.
01:27
Which made the collection slightly different
01:30
from the usual celebrity-takes-to-fashion formula.
01:35
I guess use the word integrity but maybe there was something
01:38
a little more authentic in what she was doing here,
01:40
and she certainly had a great team around her.
01:42
So we're pulling from Gwen and my's childhood
01:45
inspirations which were all the Chula Girls that we saw
01:48
in California growing up that had incredible makeup,
01:51
incredible hair, and then we're taking it all the way
01:53
up to red carpet looks of Gwen's.
01:55
So we're interpreting a day into evening stylishly,
01:58
and aesthetically Gwen.
02:01
Well I always go to the Orange County Chula Girl,
02:03
you know I'm from Anaheim, and then I always go
02:05
to the little Rasta Girl, and then the little
02:07
Great Gatsby kind of English royalty girl.
02:11
So they always come back as the same themes
02:13
over and over again.
02:15
This has grown from just an idea that she had
02:18
to pursue her dream and then culminates in this,
02:21
to this point, and I'm so happy for her.
02:24
She's such a great example of setting your mind,
02:26
heart, and passion on something and it can really happen.
02:30
So she's a great lesson to all of us.
02:32
First we had celebrity perfumes,
02:33
then we had celebrity fashion collections.
02:35
I think that the crossover between music and fashion
02:38
has been pretty well-traveled.
02:40
But there was something about L.A.M.B which
02:43
always appealed to me.
02:44
I think it's the power of Gwen's personality.
02:47
And to be influenced by people like Galliano
02:50
and Westwood, to acknowledge the influence
02:52
of people like them,
02:53
automatically puts her in a slightly more elevated
02:56
category, where you're looking forward to seeing
02:59
what she's gonna do.
03:00
(upbeat rhythmic music)
03:09
Thank you Gwen for all the good times.
03:11
If she thought her shit was bananas,
03:13
please leave a comment below.
03:14
This has been Throwback Thursdays, and I was Tim Blanks.
