I always try to listen to all the new music that's
00:02
coming out and I'll buy a stack of CDs and listen to them.
00:05
But in between, I kept throwing the Beatles on and
00:09
I did my best sketching when the Beatles were on.

00:24
Welcome back to Throwback Thursdays, I'm Tim Blanks,
00:27
and I'm very happy to say that today we're looking at
00:30
a show from Anna Sui, here first collection
00:32
of the new millennium, Spring 2000.
00:38
This show is from 15 years ago, you could say it's possibly
00:41
a mid point in her career.
00:44
But really the only thing that dates it as being awhile
00:46
ago was the models.
00:48
The remarkably consistent nature of her work means
00:51
that she could show this tomorrow and it would still
00:54
look like a wonderful Anna Sui collection.
00:56
Every time I go to one of her shows, I can see all
00:59
of her current enthusiasms paraded in front of me,
01:02
immaculately realized.
01:04
This show has a clear sort of Woodstock vibe.
01:06
She just said I wanted something that's quite Gypsy,
01:08
so we were looking for a fresh Gypsy
01:10
and that's where we went with all the rose
01:13
in the temples and onto the cheeks, the gold splashed
01:16
around the eye, black pencil under the eye, and brown.
01:19
I mean, it's quite a lot of layers, yet it still
01:21
look quite naturals.
01:23
You know, I always liked long, I mean, it's stuff
01:25
I grew up with in the 70s when I was in high school.
01:27
Of course, it wasn't that pretty and I couldn't
01:29
afford it when I was in high school
01:31
but I guess I'll be able to do it now.
01:35
[Tim] She used to a stylist for Steven Meisel among
01:38
other people and I think that really sharpened her eye.
01:41
She knows how to tell a story with clothes.
01:45
All my friends helped me so much and gave me
01:48
the encouragement and the support and
01:51
really pushed me to do this.
01:54
[Tim] What stayed true about Anna
01:56
was this wide eyed wonder.
01:57
She's always been able to bring such beauty
01:59
into what she does.
02:00
I feel an Anna Sui show is like an education in a way.
02:04
She knows you things that you want to know more about.
02:08
It's really taking what it is that I'm passionate
02:10
about at the moment and really sharing it with everyone.
02:13
This whole hippy folky kind of person but
02:16
kind of traveling through time and countries and cultures,
02:20
that's what I was going for with this season.
02:24
There's a kind of wonderful naivete when you set
02:27
out to recreate something that you wish you'd
02:29
been a part of but weren't the first time around,
02:32
probably because you were too young.
02:34
This is what she does with her collections.
02:36
She did a collection about The Factory,
02:38
Warhol's Factory.
02:40
Models looking like Edie Sedgwick and so on.
02:42
I mean, she wasn't there, but like so many people,
02:45
she wishes she was so she just did a fashion show
02:48
about it.
02:48
It's almost as though she's making one long movie
02:51
and this movie jumps through times and places
02:56
but the central character stays the same kind of girl.
02:59
We need to encourage all the dreaming
03:03
and the aspirations that are so difficult to come by now.
03:15
(cheering)
03:22
I hope this is the first of many stories
03:24
we get to do about Anna Sui's collections
03:26
but you won't get to see them unless you subscribe
03:28
to the style.com YouTube channel.
03:32
So do that.
03:33
This was Throwback Thursdays, I'm Tim Blanks.
