The New Evening Bob

Whether you’re headed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala tonight or downtown for drinks with a friend, the undone ease of a tousled (and temporary!) bob is brimming with possibility. In today’s beauty video, hairstylist Duffy demonstrates how to get the look—transforming model Tilda Lindstam’s waist-length hair into a textured chin-length style with little more than surf spray and a few simple pins.

So today's look, very simple.
00:12
We're creating lots of texture.
00:14
We're using a surf spray.
00:16
Very simple technique of braiding the hair,
00:19
rolling it underneath and pinning it
00:20
to create this kind of faux bob.
00:22
So we're gonna saturate the hair.
00:24
We're just using the Wella Ocean Spritz.
00:27
Really saturating all this hair, we really want to
00:29
dry it out and create a lot of volume through the hair.
00:32
So just tip your head upside down completely.
00:34
We're just gonna put the hair into the diffuser,
00:36
low speed, low heat and we're just dry,
00:38
really drying in root lift into that,
00:41
into the hair.
00:42
So once you've diffused that into the hair,
00:45
we're just gonna take the diffuser and
00:47
we're just gonna break up this texture a little bit more.
00:50
So once we've created the texture, we're gonna find
00:52
the parting that we want to find.
00:55
Just very naturally with your finger comb through.
00:57
We're gonna grab all the hair, we're gonna
00:59
split it into three.
01:00
And we're gonna braid underneath,
01:03
underneath, underneath.
01:05
It's a regular three strand braid but we're passing
01:07
under rather than over.
01:09
What that's gonna do is that's gonna tuck the sides in
01:11
for us and leave the top section in the back over
01:15
so that you can create this head shape.
01:17
Once we get to the end, we're just gonna take the hair
01:18
and we're just gonna faux roll it against itself.
01:23
Up and under and we're gonna secure it
01:25
with a grip underneath.
01:28
And you can start to work with whatever is falling out
01:30
through that front area, whatever doesn't quite make it,
01:33
we just start to work the shape.
01:36
A little more.
01:37
Just comb in through this front section and
01:39
just work this texture as much as you can.
01:42
As much as you want to, really break that texture out.
01:45
So we're gonna end up with a cleaner side and
01:47
a much rougher side.
01:48
All I'm gonna do is just comb through this front area
01:52
and we're just gonna put a couple of grips in through here.
01:54
It's broken and effortless.
01:56
It almost looks undone.
