When I was in undergrad here in the U.S.
00:09
I really wanted to get my hair braided.
00:12
I took this Peter Pan Bus to New York
00:14
to get it braided at the African salons
00:16
and I was so morbidly disappointed.
00:19
I went home for the summer and an aunt of mine
00:22
who has a hair salon, I went and asked her to teach me.
00:27
I learned how to cornrow and box braid and twist.
00:33
Now, I really enjoy braiding hair for my friends.
00:38
(upbeat music)
00:40
I have six friends with me today.
00:43
Miriam, Hallie, Jennifer, Tashal,
00:46
Nontsikelelo, and then Stacey.
00:49
When I got back to school from learning
00:51
how to braid hair in Kenya, I also decided
00:53
that it was gonna be my side hustle.
00:55
I was gonna make some money (laughs)
00:58
braiding people's hair.
00:59
So I went to the great troubles of creating a poster,
01:02
but I just didn't have the heart to charge anyone
01:04
so my friends would make appointments with me
01:07
and I'd spend the whole weekend braiding their hair
01:09
and then I just couldn't charge them.
01:11
So I never made any money from it.
01:16
Lupita used to braid my hair in class.
01:19
Well, sometimes getting my hands busy
01:21
would be a nice way to stay in the room. (laughs)
01:24
And not asleep.
01:26
The trick I'm learning is that you have to keep it loose.
01:30
I'll take note of that.
01:31
Whereas with African hair, that's exactly
01:33
the thing that is the enemy.
01:36
What I love about my hair texture and this kind of hair,
01:40
you can do all sorts of interesting angular shapes with it.
01:44
Braiding just tells a story.
01:46
It's just like sculpting the locks really.
01:49
These are known as Bantu knots or China bumps.
01:54
Your hair is your frame, it's so important.
01:56
If you jack someone's hair up, (laughs)
01:59
the world sees it.
02:00
[Woman] Please don't jack my hair up. (Lupita laughs)
02:03
No, I trust you.
02:05
For me, braiding hair is an intimate thing.
02:10
It's like getting up close and personal
02:12
and I like to do it for people that I know
02:15
and love and trust.
02:19
I think I'm just attracted to people who are honest
02:23
and expressive.
02:26
I like playful people as well.
02:28
People who are not afraid of their inner child
02:32
and these friends of mine are that.
